Lakota Language Preservation Project

Preserving Indigenous Language, Cultural Knowledge & Intergenerational Learning Through Emerging Technology

Lakota Language Preservation Project
Our Mission

Why This Project Exists

The Lakota Language Preservation Project was created to help support the preservation, accessibility, and intergenerational transfer of Lakota language and cultural knowledge through emerging educational technology.

Indigenous languages carry far more than vocabulary alone — they preserve history, identity, worldview, oral tradition, spiritual understanding, storytelling traditions, and cultural memory passed through generations.

As fluent speakers become fewer over time, many Native communities face the urgent challenge of protecting language traditions that are increasingly at risk of disappearing. This initiative explores how artificial intelligence, interactive learning systems, and modern educational tools may help younger generations engage with language learning in accessible and meaningful ways.

Through respectful collaboration, educational outreach, and AI-assisted learning technology, the project seeks to help create additional pathways for language engagement, pronunciation guidance, cultural understanding, and future language continuity.

Our Approach

Technology, Education & Cultural Preservation

The project includes developing an AI-assisted Lakota educational companion to support pronunciation guidance, vocabulary learning, conversational interaction, and exploration of cultural context.

Unlike basic translation software, the system is being developed to encourage deeper cultural understanding by connecting words and phrases to their symbolic, historical, and community significance whenever appropriate.

The educational assistant can respond to language questions, pronunciation requests, and cultural learning prompts, helping users engage with Lakota language concepts through interactive dialogue and guided educational experiences.

The long-term vision is to explore how conversational AI, voice interaction, educational technology, and future learning platforms may help support Indigenous language accessibility for younger generations while encouraging cultural respect, curiosity, and continued learning.

Supporting, Not Replacing

This project is intended to support language education, cultural awareness, and preservation efforts — not replace the importance of tribal elders, teachers, fluent speakers, or traditional knowledge keepers.

Honoring Community Guidance

The long-term goal is to help create additional educational tools that may assist younger generations in engaging with Lakota language and cultural learning while honoring the importance of community guidance, lived tradition, oral teaching, and cultural respect.

Authentic Cultural Knowledge

Future development efforts are intended to encourage collaboration, accessibility, and educational support while recognizing that authentic cultural knowledge remains deeply connected to community, history, family, and lived experience.
